  4. M.I.A. video banned from YouTube

M.I.A.The graphic video for M.I.A.’s most recent single, ‘Born Free,’ prompted its controversial ban by YouTube due to excessive violence.

For those who haven’t seen the clip, it’s a docudrama-style depiction of American military forces rounding up members of a targeted minority of red-heads in an unnamed city, taking them to the desert and executing them. Much-discussed reference points include the Peter Watkins 1971 countercultural film “Punishment Park” and, because the raided people have red hair, the South Park episode “Ginger Kids,” which satirized the idea of targeted minority groups by putting redheads in the victim role. In fact, the French Director Romain Gavras who created the 9 min feature, will soon release his directorial debut, “Redheads,” which takes the plot of the M.I.A. video feature-length and promises to be both ultra-violent and graphic.

M.I.A, the ‘transnational’ hip-hop star reaction to YouTubes stance was to tweet “BOOOOOOOOO” and provided a link to the “Born Free” video on her own website.

It is a little ironic that a single titled ‘Born Free’ would create this stir, but the music it self provides us with a taster of M.I.A.’s forth coming album.
